EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
NEW YORK CITY IS THE PLACE TO BE
The New York Arts Program knows a lot about NYC and the endless creative opportunities that can be found here, after all, we have been working with artists in the city for over 50 years. When young artists join us for a semester, we make sure that they utilize all of the city’s diverse cultural offerings. NYC has so much to offer, ranging from museums, galleries and architecture to food, unique urban experiences and did we mention PEOPLE? The people students meet, work, collaborate and live with all become part of their creative community. It’s more than just a study away program, it’s the pursuit of a life as an artist.
THE PROGRAM
Four professional artists in the areas of Visual Arts & Art History, Film & Media, and Performing Arts serve as faculty advisors and seminar instructors. The faculty work closely with students to customize internships in the creative fields that align with students’ artistic, academic and professional interests. In addition, faculty lead critical thinking seminars in their area of focus, engage in regular one-on-one advising and steer students in their independent capstone projects.
WAY MORE THAN IN INTERNSHIP
The New York Arts Program is so much more than an internship. Students spend the semester taking seminars focused on their respective interests in the arts, taught by faculty who are practicing artists in NYC and beyond.
Program events are required throughout the semester as well and provide inspiring and thought-provoking discussions for students and faculty. We have harbored an assortment of impressive guest speakers. To name a few:
- Visual Artist, Kari Cholnoky
- Performing Artist, Daniel Alexander Jones
- Writer/Critic, Mónica de la Torre
- Filmmakers, Julius Pryor and Marttise Hill of Pryor Hill Productions
BUT WOW, WHAT GREAT INTERNSHIPS
On top of program events and seminars, students work 30 hours per week at a combination of one to three internships. The New York Arts Program has been providing apprenticeships for young artists in the creative fields for over 50 years. In that long history we have solidified some amazing relationships in the arts and we're always facilitating exciting new ones as well.

ACADEMIC CREDIT
In order to maintain flexibility surrounding academic credit requirements for our students and partner schools, the New York Arts Program offers two credit structures. The 30-hour program is 30 internship hours per week in addition to one seminar. The 20-hour program is 20 internship hours per week paired with two seminars over the course of the semester. Both structures result in 4.5 credit units.

THE CITY. ONE SEMESTER. LOTS OF ART.
Being in New York is incredible because there's always more to see…but being in New York with other artists who are trying to embrace the city in a similar way to me has been really awesome.
Sy Schimberg Spring ‘21
New York City prioritizes the arts. There are endless opportunities for our students to engage with art in the city whether it's a poetry reading, gallery opening, open mic night, musical performance or just a walk through the busy streets. Spending the semester amongst so many working artists in a city with such an incredible creative history is a reliably inspirational experience.
Students often remark that living in NYC feels just as foreign an experience as traveling abroad. With so many cultures to explore, new foods to try and people to meet, there's always something new to see or do.
Our students have been fortunate enough to have several incredible housing opportunities in NYC. Whether it's beautiful Brooklyn Heights or just blocks from Central Park, the city is at their fingertips and we make a point to give them all the resources they need to explore!
