The testimony of the hundreds of students who have pursued professional internships through the New York Arts Program
affirms interning as a formative experience. Alumni of the program
often regard the internship as the most effective career development
tool they have encountered. Internships greatly assist in clarifying a
student's career goals, grad school plans, or employment after
graduation.
Experiencing. Learning. Networking.
Ben, College of Santa Fe "As
an artist, my foundations as an actor have been re-constituted and
strengthened immensely. I have found a new level of artistic life on
the stage. I've also grown immensely as a human being, living and
working with so many different people from such vastly different
backgrounds."
Rebecca, Kenyon "At
the end of it all, I couldn't be happier or more satisfied by how my
semester turned out. I have made friendships and connections, both in
my peer group and in the theatre community. I have assistant stage
managed an Off Broadway show, acted in an Off Off Broadway showcase,
auditioned semi-successfully for a conservatory acting program, and
gotten a job as a Personal Assistant to a well-known Broadway actress
and director. And I couldn't have done any of it in Gambier, Ohio!"
Chris, OWU "From
my internship experiences in graphic design I have learned the steps it
takes to work with a client, to listen to their business concepts,
ideas, methods of communication, and transform it into a creative
product. I have learned to use design software in a professional
manner. The internship showed me that there is so much more to learn
after college about the real world of business methods and standards."
Emily, Hope "Intellectually
I am constantly challenged to not only observe the arts, people, and
experience I have had but to analyze as I am experiencing them. To draw
my own intelligent conclusions and I have gained an ability to process
concepts, perspectives and ideas through discussion and honest dialogue
with others."
Jen, Denison "My
internship has 100% reinforced my love for the theatre and wanting to
be a part of it. My New York experience allowed me to learn how to
manage my time in the real world."
Caitlin, Earlham "I
think I am more confident in my work and can apply this to other areas
of academia. The program has made it more clear to me how the art world
operates and how to attempt to get your work out there, as well as the
jobs that are available and how artists survive."
Whitney, DePauw "I
have a much more mature view of my chosen field now that I have spent
three months behind the scenes at a casting agency. I'm much better
equipped now. I'll take with me what I've learned from exhibits at the
Met and several galleries, my memories of plays I've seen, and everyday
experiences like street encounters. I thoroughly enjoyed my internship."
Michael, Kalamazoo "For
a journalism student, my internship was a dream. And being in New York
City helped me to grow in terms of teleological perspective. It's hard
to get upset about an iPod when a man is lying naked on the street on
your way home from work. As an artist, this place teems with poetry."
Andrea, Earlham "This
has been an amazing transforming semester for me. My internship and
life in New York have given me a totally new perspective on art and the
opportunities for me in the field magazine and publication design.
Personally I feel so much more independent and am better able to meet
new people and seek out interesting experiences."
Brooke, Depauw "My
intellectual growth during the semester has really been shocking to
myself. Prior to my arrival, I thought New York would just provide me
with inspiration to make art, but my internship at Free Arts for Abused
Children has inspired me into a career in art therapy where I can
combine my love of art, my passion for public service, and my interest
in psychology."
