The New York Arts Program (NYAP), established in 1967, is a program managed by Ohio Wesleyan University that assists undergraduate students in the performing arts, visual arts, and media arts disciplines in finding related field internships in New York City. The New York Arts Program allows students to learn first hand what is happening in their chosen artistic field, and to gain valuable experience for their resume and as preparation for entering the job market or grad school. Oftentimes our sponsors have looked to hire from their intern pool, and in the past several students have accepted full-time positions from their sponsors upon graduation.
What does the program look for in candidates?
Of the approximately 50 undergraduates accepted to the program each semester, the New York Arts Program selects applicants based upon academic achievement, co-curricular and/or work involvement, commitment to their art, and career motivation.
Where have NYAP students interned in the past?
The New York Arts Program is known for its extensive network of highly respected arts and cultural organizations located in New York City. These artists and organizations serve as sponsors and work closely with the student and his/her New York faculty advisor to insure the best possible learning experience. Visit our Sponsor page for an idea of some past and present sponsors associated with New York Arts Program internships.
Is there a summer program?
Not yet, but we are in the planning stages of adding a summer program.
When do the fall and spring semesters begin?
Generally, the fall semester begins the day after Labor Day in September. The spring semester usually begins in mid January.
Does the Program provide housing?
Yes. Housing is dorm style with students living in singles, doubles, and quads. Kitchens and bathrooms are shared, and there are two lounges with televisions and DVD equipment. There is a piano in one of the lounges, and computer stations located in the basement. Laundry facilities are available at the Program House. There is a Residence Manager on the premises. See Housing page.
Are students required to live in the Program House?
Students are not required to live in the New York Arts Program House, but many do because of its great Chelsea location, the number of amenities offered, and the reasonable cost. Housing is optional and is on a first-come, first serve basis. However, many students prefer to live in the Program House because it allows them to be with other interns, network with them, and plan many social activities.
Where do students live if they choose not to live in the Program House?
Some students have family or friends living in the city and they choose to spend the semester living with them. Sometimes, if the Program Housing fills up for the semester, students use resources like studenthousing.org for assistance. They can provide living communities, which are designed and customized exclusively for off-campus college students and interns.

Can I apply to be an R.A.?
Yes, if you are a 15-week student. Before applying, keep in mind that R.A.’s need to be available in the evenings when the Program House is most populated. If your internship involves heavy evening hours, e.g. a theatre production placement where you are needed at the theatre from 6pm until 11, it’s probably not a good idea to apply to be an R.A.
If I bring my laptop, is the Program house wired for Internet access?
Yes, but you should have a wireless card installed in your computer.
Can I pre-arrange my own internship?
Some students have done extensive research on a particular artist or institution and this is commendable. Make sure you discuss this with your New York Arts Program faculty advisor. Your advisor will then make sure that your prospective sponsor fills the Program’s academic requirements before proceeding with the approval.
